ESTAFETTE #3 – DALAL MITWALLY + LEYLI RASHIDI RAUF

ESTAFETTE #3

On show Dalal Mitwally (JO/NL) and  Leyli Rashidi Rauf (IR/NL). 18 July – 21 September 2025

The third edition of Estafette kicks off with Dalal Mitwally and Leyli Rashidi Rauf. During a two-week residency, this creative duo will transform our exhibition spaces into open studios, inviting the public to witness their process. Throughout this time, they will create, collaborate, visit inspiring places, and engage in discussions, all while working toward an exhibition that will be on view for nine weeks.

Dalal Mitwally & Lelyi Rashidi Rauf

Dalal Mitwally and Leyli Rashidi Rauf both focus on the human scale in their work. They are interested in capturing stories of people through observation, conversation and research. Dalal engages directly with communities, transforming memories and local histories into murals that become part of the public fabric. Her work amplifies voices often overlooked, creating visual narratives that respond to their surroundings. Leyli turns more inward to explore identity, gender and the psychology of the self. Her meticulous drawings, paintings and installations are equally grounded in human connection. They both use lived experiences to inform their visual language, weaving together individual and collective stories.

How will their approaches intertwine during the residency? What insights will they gain from each other? And how will their work come to life within four walls of KEVN?

Dalal Mitwally and Leyli Rashidi Rauf will pass the baton to Sergio Gómez and Martinus Papilaja

Dalal Mitwally

Dalal Mitwally, originally from Amman (Jordan) and now based in Rotterdam, predominantly works in public space – creating large-scale murals.

Her work is rooted in the stories of the communities surrounding each mural. To prepare, she engages in in-depth research – interviewing locals and exploring historical archives to build a connection with the place and its people. She then translates her findings into collages of text and (found) photographs, which serve as the foundation for her murals. Using spray paint, latex, and brushes, she brings these narratives to life on walls. Through her work, she seeks to create a dialogue between the environment and its inhabitants. She has brought this approach to places such as Beirut, Linz, Belfast, Amman and Patras.

Leyli Rashidi Rauf

Leyli Rashidi Rauf, born in Tehran (Iran) and now based in Amsterdam, explores themes of identity, gender and the representation of women in her work.

Before moving to the Netherlands to deepen her artistic practice, she taught drawing for five years at an art school in Tehran. Her work is characterized by detailed, realistic imagery captured in oil paint, charcoal, and pencil – often using a distinctive dark color palette. She also creates installations using paper, textile and found objects. Drawing from observation and conversation, she portrays figures, faces and everyday objects, using them as a lens to reflect on human identity and psychology. Her work invites viewers to question their own perceptions of self and the world around them.
