ESTAFETTE #2 – RUTGER DE VRIES + JOHANNES LANGKAMP

ESTAFETTE #2

On show Rutger de Vries (NL/DE) and  Johannes Langkamp (DE/NL). 02 May – 06 July 2025

The second edition of Estafette kicks off with Rutger de Vries and Johannes Langkamp. During a two-week residency, this creative duo will transform our exhibition spaces into open studios, inviting the public to witness their process. Throughout this time, they will create, collaborate, visit inspiring places, and engage in discussions, all while working toward an exhibition that will be on view for nine weeks.

Rutger de Vries & Johannes Langkamp
Rutger de Vries and Johannes Langkamp are both fascinated by coincidence and unpredictability. They establish specific conditions using models, machines or installations and experiment with the potential outcomes. Take, for instance, Rutger’s Circle Sprayers: a set of five fire extinguishers filled with paint, which – through a self-designed machine – spray colorful circles on a wall. Or Johannes’s Same same, where a paint roller attached to an electric drill is shortly activated to leave traces of paint on surfaces nearby. Their work captures moments of controlled chance, where mechanical precision meets spontaneous expression. What discoveries will emerge from their collaboration? What sets them apart? And what boundaries will they push in each other’s artistic practices?

Rutger de Vries and Johannes Langkamp will pass the baton to Dalal Mitwally and Leyli Rashidi Rauf

Rutger de Vries

Rutger de Vries, born in the Netherlands and currently living in Berlin, develops his own tools, techniques and instruments that form the foundation of his visual work.

His inventory includes computer-controlled machines and installations, along with spray paint and paint bombs. Drawing on techniques commonly used in graffiti, he is also intrigued by everyday materials from hardware stores, such as wall paint and construction supplies. With these tools and materials, Rutger creates a unique framework where control and chance coexist. By strongly focusing on machine use and obscuring his identity, he questions the scope of his own artistic authorship while drawing from the visual language of anti-establishment movements.

Johannes Langkamp

Johannes Langkamp, originally from Germany and now based in Rotterdam, describes himself as an explorer of visuals. Driven by the question, “What would happen if…?”, he embarks on a journey of discovery for new visual concepts.

His work is marked by a sense of playful curiosity and extensive research into movement and time, which he translates into kinetic models, videos, photographic techniques and spatial installations. It is as if the artist’s thought process is laid out before you, not as a drawing on paper, but as a sketch unfolding in physical space. Through his experiments with materials, situations and displays, Johannes aims to challenge our viewing behaviour and expand our perception of reality itself.
